Third World Championships in Canada<\/h2>

Hamilton 2003<\/h3>

The 2026 Road Cycling World Championships will be the third held in Canada. The last time it was on Canadian soil was 2003 when it was held in Hamilton. On that occasion, the elite men\u2019s title was won by Igor Astarloa, with Spanish teammate Alejandro Valverde in second place.<\/p>

Both would subsequently be banned for doping offences, although it didn\u2019t affect these results. The men\u2019s time trial was won by David Millar, but he was stripped of the title after he confessed to using EPO, and it was awarded to Australian Michael Rogers.<\/p>

The women\u2019s elite race was a triumph for Swede Susanne Ljungskog, who took home her second consecutive world title. The silver medal went to Mirjam Melchers, who was also handy at cyclocross, and the bronze to Britain\u2019s Nicole Cooke, who was handy at everything and an outspoken critic of dopers.<\/p>

Montreal 1974<\/h3>

The first Road World Championships in Canada were also raced in Montreal. There were fewer events - four in total: A professional men\u2019s race won by Eddy Merckx from the eternal second Raymond Poulidor and France\u2019s Mariano Martinez. An amateur men\u2019s race won by Poland\u2019s Janusz Kowalski. A sixty-kilometre (37.5 miles) women\u2019s road race contested by a mere thirty riders and won by Genevi\u00e8ve Gambillon<\/strong><\/a>. The French rider took her second world title and was back at work the next week as a nursing assistant. Incredibly, she\u2019d raced the event with a fractured collarbone, which she\u2019d broken less than two weeks before.<\/p>

The final event was the 100 kilometre team time trial. The USSR (Soviet Union) and DDR (East Germany) teams were the acknowledged experts at this discipline, which represented the chance to demonstrate that a utopian socialist republic would better the self-interest of capitalism. Sweden was the winner ahead of the USSR and DDR.<\/p>

When are the Road Cycling World Championships 2026?<\/h3>

The World Championships will be held in Montreal, the largest city in the French-speaking province of Quebec, between September 20 and 27, 2026.<\/p>

French settlers from La Fl\u00e8che in the Loire Valley first named their new town, founded in 1642, Ville Marie after the Virgin Mary. The current form of the name, Montr\u00e9al, is believed to be derived from Mount Royal (Mont Royal in French), the triple-peaked hill in the heart of the city.<\/p>
