It’s certainly been a newsworthy story and has been covered by the BBC, CNN, The Daily Telegraph, and ForecourtTrader along with cycling websites and many more.

“Baffling sponsorship deal” - PR Week

PR Week described it as a “baffling sponsorship deal” and environmental groups were quick to lambast both British Cycling and Shell.

As Rijden is an organisation that prides itself that its gifts for cyclists are produced using renewable energy, you’d expect us to be against this deal. And we are but it’s not just that Shell is fundamentally an oil company. We thought we ought to explain our reasoning.

Unsubscribers

I included a copy of my email of complaint to British Cycling in our latest email newsletter. I wasn’t sure how it would be received but it was the first time we’d had some unsubscribers. I know, therefore, that this article is likely to lose Rijden some support.

However, I’d be betraying our values if I said nothing.

Part of the original inspiration for Rijden was my concern about how products were being sourced and produced in terms of their impact on the environment and the people producing them.

Some people have pointed to Shell’s green credentials and their investment in renewable energy sources. Sadly, it’s not all that the adverts portray. Shell’s investment in renewable is tiny but it does spend a lot on advertising which portrays it in a favourable light.

Reactions

Unsurprisingly, organisations such as Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and the Guardian have condemned the move. The reaction from British cyclists, many of whom are members or former members of British Cycling has been more mixed.

Reactions fall into three main types:

Those that are very unhappy about the decision.

Then there are those that don’t really like it but think British Cycling needs the funds to continue to be a world-class performer.

And finally, there are some that really can’t see what all the fuss is about and call the ‘complainers’ hypocrites on the basis that they use oil-based products including bike parts.

When I last looked, there had been 992 reactions on the British Cycling Facebook post announcing the sponsorship deal. I know this is not very scientific, but of those 571 appear to be negative reactions and 314 are overtly positive. I’m not sure what the use of the laughing icon means, but if we assume they’re positive too then that gives a positive total of 421.

A fairly even split then which reflects my reading of comments people have made on various forums.

Do We Need the Money that Badly?

I’m a British Cycling member but I’ll be honest that I’ve been fairly complacent about the organisation. I pay my money by direct debit, use my racing licence to race and occasionally volunteer in roles that require membership.

I don’t know what the financial position is of British Cycling. I know that when HSBC pulled out of its sponsorship deal it left a monetary hole. I can’t agree that the end justifies the means. I’d like British Cycling to be more open about why it plumped for Shell as opposed to a smaller deal with a less tainted partner.

Some have argued that we need the money to fund our elite athletes. I don’t know about that. All I know is that funding for grassroots activities seems to be very sparse and that cyclocross gets very little support. This is the most popular competitive cycling discipline in the UK.

So if there’s lots of money going somewhere, I don’t know where.

Why do we disagree with the deal?

As an organisation, we disagree on two levels. Firstly because it’s Shell. This is a company that has an unenviable track record in ethics. It would be hard to find a more toxic brand to associate with.

Secondly, we think the association with an oil company is potentially damaging to British Cycling which is a membership organisation.

That’s the summary, you can read the detail below.

Ethics

It’s hard to know where to start with Shell because they have successfully mired themselves in controversy for as far back as I can recall. The easiest thing to do is to point you at a report by Friends of the Earth International that accuses Shell of the most heinous crimes.

If you don’t want to read the whole report, here’s the summary:

According to Amnesty International, Shell was involved in numerous murders, tortures and rapes that were carried out by paramilitary organizations in Nigeria in the 1990s.

Shell transformed the Niger Delta into a disaster area.

Shell knew its actions would cause catastrophic climate change.

Rather than doing anything about climate change, Shell spends $22 million annually on anti-climate lobbying.

Shell has been involved in the bribery of public officials.

Shell avoids paying taxes. Shell actually received a net tax refund in the United Kingdom in 2016.

Shell turned a beautiful Caribbean bay into an asphalt wasteland.

Despite a court decision, Shell is attempting to avoid liability for earthquake-related damages in Groningen in the Netherlands.

The impact upon British Cycling

We think that the negative reaction to the decision by British Cycling to partner with a company that has been listed as the world’s ninth most polluting company is potentially damaging to the sport.

Not only is it likely to deter other financial supporters but it may have a significant impact on the support from individual members. As an organisation, British Cycling heavily depends on its members who volunteer in numerous roles.

A significant number of people have informed me that they will cancel their membership. This prevents them from having any official volunteering capacity such as driving a lead car for a race or acting as a commissaire. Only time will tell what the impact will be.

Certainly, British Cycling has upset many of its paying supporters which is not a good idea for a membership-based organisation.

Maybe I’m wrong

Maybe I’m wrong. I sincerely hope so. Perhaps British Cycling will persuade Shell to turn over a new leaf, wholeheartedly embrace renewable energy, and become a leader in positive business ethics. Maybe it’ll even become a B Corp.

17 October 2022, Tim Costello

NEVER MISS OUT

Subscribe to get all our latest stories and news.
