His individual total of 3,960 points was not only 1,315 more than second-placed Mathieu van der Poel, but it was only bettered by the combined points of three teams, including his own.

Van der Poel also scored four wins, but he only rode one other race, Ronde van Vlaanderen, where he was third. The best Flemish rider in this category was Wout van Aert, who was fourth.

Much has been written about the ‘failure’ of Wout this Spring, but we think it’s unfair. The injury he suffered last year to his knee has left lasting scars, and throughout winter, he was playing catch-up. Second at Dwars door Vlaanderen and Brabantse-Pijl with fourth places at the Ronde van Vlaanderen, Paris-Roubaix and Amstel Gold is hardly a disaster. We have no doubt he will be winning races again soon.

Van der Poel was king of the cobbles. He was pushed hard by Pogačar at Paris-Roubaix, but Mathieu possesses bike handling skills that the somewhat erratic cornering Slovenian can only dream of. Tadej was lucky to get away with minor injuries after unpressured errors at Strade Bianche and Paris-Roubaix.

Who impressed

Matthew Brennan

Britain’s Matthew Brennan impressed on his debut in the Spring Classics, as he begins his career with Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s World Tour squad. The nineteen-year-old Darlington Dynamo is a former junior track World Champion and a graduate from the Fensham Howes junior set-up.

Following victory at GP Denain and two stages of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, he was drafted into Team Visma’s Paris-Roubaix line-up. Making his first appearance at a Monument and Paris-Roubaix, he was at the sharp end of the race before fading to finish forty-fourth.

Rarely has a rider made such a promising start to their career.

Fred Wright

Another Britain whose name kept popping up in the Spring Classics was established Bahrain-Victorious rider Fred Wright. We tend to associate him with the Grand Tours, where he has come close to stage victories at Le Tour and La Vuelta.

He has a pedigree in the Classics, with previous best of seventh and eighth at De Ronde, so maybe this year’s ninth at Paris-Roubaix and tenth at Milano-Sanremo were not such a surprise. It’s a pleasure to see a rider of his obvious talent diversifying across both the Classics and the Grand Tours.

Paris-Roubaix early break

Just over twenty kilometres from the start in Compiègne, eight riders forged clear of the peloton in Paris-Roubaix. Early breaks never succeed at Paris-Roubaix, at least not since 1988 when Dirk Demol and Thomas Wegmüller were all that remained of the group that had raced clear after forty-four kilometres. The favourites had been unable to close the gap, and as they neared the finish, the pair were still two minutes clear.

The sprint became a formality for Dirk Demol when a bag became entangled in Wegmüller’s rear derailleur. Nearly two minutes later, Laurent Fignon sprinted to third. It was Demol’s greatest victory. Wegmüller came close at the Ronde van Vlaanderen four years later when another early break succeeded and he finished second behind fellow escapee Jacky Durand.

Rutsch and Hoelgaard were all that were left of the break when the steam train of Van der Poel, Pedersen, and Pogačar caught them shortly after the Trouée d'Arenberg. They hung on as long as they could but were eventually dropped. The German-Norwegian pair of Rutsch and Hoelgaard finished sixth and eighth, respectively, after having been at the head of the race in a break for 142 kilometres.

The next Van der Poel?

Much was made in the Dutch cycling press about the failure, notwithstanding Mathieu van der Poel’s victories, of Dutch cyclists to make an impact in the Spring Classics. Thirty-two-year-old Mike Teunissen, in his eleventh year as a World Tour rider, finished twenty-fourth overall with best placings of tenth at E3 Saxo Classic and eleventh at Milano-Sanremo.

Maybe, however, the future is brighter. Sprint ace Olav Kooij finished second at Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, eighth at Milano-Sanremo, then crashed out of Gent-Wevelgem with a fractured collarbone.

Another bright prospect is Tibor Del Grosso. The under-23 Cyclocross World Champion, an event he won with insolent ease, was unlucky at GP de Denain, was sixth at Dwars door Vlaanderen and tenth at Brabantse Pijl. Given that he rides for Alpecin-Deceuninck, the same team as Van der Poel, it’s tempting to draw comparisons.

Top team of the Spring Classics

World Tour

UAE Team Emirates - XRG came out as the top team, narrowly pipping Lidl-Trek. It could be argued that Lidl-Trek were the true ‘top team’.

A number of the Alpecin-Deceuninck team members underperformed this Spring. Jasper Philipsen suffered from injury and never looked like the rider who triumphed at Milano-Sanremo last season and tore apart the field at Classic Brugge-De Panne. Was it Dwars door Vlaanderen or Amstel Gold? I’m going to let you make your own minds up. What was noticeable about these two races was that neither was won by a top favourite.

Impressive as it is to watch Tadej and Mathieu ride away into the distance, it doesn’t often generate the level of drama or excitement you might wish for. Between them, Pogačar and Van der Poel crossed the line first in almost half of our Spring Classic races.

Dwars door Vlaanderen

Firstly, Dwars door Vlaanderen, where EF Education-EasyPost’s Neilson Powless overcame seemingly impossible odds to lift his arms in the air ahead of an embarrassed trio of Team Visma | Lease a Bike riders.

The bumble bee Dutch squad gambled all on Wout van Aert’s sprint, and he failed. Why on earth the three didn’t take turns to attack him is one of the great mysteries of the Spring. It was, apparently, team orders. Neilson Powless is a superb rider, and they vastly underestimated him.

Amstel Gold Race

Amstel Gold Race was another with an unexpected result and a truly deserving winner. When Tadej set off for home, having dropped Alaphalippe on the Kruisberg, it looked like the race was over.

No one had told Mattias Skjelmose, or he hadn’t read the script, as he set off in pursuit. Once Remco Evenepoel bridged across, a long chase ensued during which the Belgian-Danish pair slowly but inexorably chiselled away at the gap.

Second by second, they drew closer as ahead of them, Pogačar battled into a headwind. It set up a sprint between the three combatants where the Dane proved strongest.

Unsung hero

Not everyone gets to stand on the podium, soaking up the adoration of the fans. For most riders, the only welcome is a recovery drink and a shower, and for some, the prospect of doing it all again in a couple of days.

Thirty-year-old Lotto professional Arjen Livyns is one such rider. He finished more of the Spring Classics than anyone else. From thirteen starts, he only failed to finish the last, Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He was there at the start of the season on the first of March at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and, almost, there at the end.

Excluding any distance ridden at La Doyenne, that’s 2,618 kilometres of racing. This is his eighth year riding at the Pro Conti level, and his eighth place at Dwars door Vlaanderen must count as his most impressive result. He’s a native of Waregem, where Dwars door Vlaanderen finished. No doubt, he received a rousing welcome home on this occasion.

Last season, he had two months out following a serious crash at Strade-Bianche that left him lacerated with cuts. He still came back to start and finish La Vuelta. He may never get to stand on the podium at a major race, but he counts as our unsung hero of the season.

More numbers

Cycling is increasingly a sport of numbers, so we thought we’d throw in a few random ones.

944 different riders took part in the twenty races, with 45% scoring at least one point.

The race with the highest number of non-finishers was Strade-Bianche with 76 DNFs. That compares to last year’s La Fleche, where 130 riders didn’t complete the course. Once again, Milano-Torino had the lowest drop-out rate when only four riders failed to finish.

Only five riders finished outside the time limit at Paris-Roubaix, compared to eighteen last year.
