This year's Tour de France starts in Lille on Saturday, 5 July and ends in Paris on Sunday, 27 July. There'll be extensive TV coverage with free live coverage in the UK on ITV4. The opening week\u2019s stages hug the north of France, which makes a day or multi-day trip from the UK an attractive option.<\/p>

There\u2019s something slightly remarkable about the route of this year\u2019s Tour de France. For the first time since 2020, it\u2019s constraining itself within the boundaries of L'Hexagone. No popping off to Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark or elsewhere. This is a real French Tour de France.<\/p>

Starting in the very northern tip of France, the race makes its way through Normandy and into Brittany, pausing in Caen on the way for the first of two individual time trials. It then heads right through the heart of France via the Massif Central to the Pyrenees and then on to the Alps.<\/p>

Up until this point, it\u2019s a typical Tour de France, but instead of the traditional parade on the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es, there are three climbs up to Montmartre to contend with. It\u2019s tradition with a twist.<\/p>

Tour de France 2025 - Key stages<\/strong><\/h2>

We\u2019ve picked out the stages that you won\u2019t want to miss, as they are likely to be decisive in deciding who will don the final yellow jersey in Paris or should provide some exciting racing<\/p>

Week 1 - ideal for a trip to northern France<\/h3>

The first eight stages of the Tour de France take place in the north and conveniently close to a number of ports from the UK. The key yellow jersey stage in the first week, in the absence of any cobbles or serious hills, is likely to be stage 5\u2019s 33-kilometre individual time trial. It\u2019s virtually flat and should suit the big gear, time trial specialist.<\/p>

That\u2019s not to suggest that there won\u2019t be some exciting racing, but it\u2019s unlikely that, unless the wind really gets up that there will be major time differences. Stages 2, 6 and 7 all feature climbs to the finish, but these are likely to be the happy hunting group of riders like Mathieu van der Poel, if he\u2019s fit.<\/p>
