We\u2019ve tried to reflect the consensus on what constitutes a Spring Classic. Cycling\u2019s Spring Classics season starts with Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and ends with Liege-Bastogne-Liege, and we only consider one-day races as qualifying for Spring Classic status.<\/p><p>We include all the World Tour races, which incorporate four of the monuments: Milano Sanremo, Ronde van Vlaanderen, Paris-Roubaix and Liege-Bastogne-Liege.<\/p><p>Then we add in all the Belgian 1.Pro races, as the Spring Classics are primarily about Belgium. We also add Le Samyn because, although only ranked as a UCI 1.1 race, it has all the characteristics of a Belgian classic. Only a second place at Paris-Roubaix prevented his clean sweep. The French monument, once again, demonstrated the World Champions\u2019 limitations.<\/p><p>We have to cast our minds all the way back to 1981 to find the last Tour de France winner to triumph at Paris-Roubaix, when <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/blog\/toujours-hinault\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Bernard Hinault was in his prime<\/strong><\/a>. Poga\u010dar has now come second twice in an event that does not best suit his talents. This speaks volumes about Poga\u010dar\u2019s status as the world\u2019s indisputable number one road racer.<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.podos.io\/kpj4ov1x6coyhulj2ipczrz1gqw34evwkzxadmhyamvuomfw.jpeg.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"The top two - Tadej Poga\u010dar and Wout van Aert. Van Aert achieved his total from seven rides, capped with probably the most popular victory of the year at Paris-Roubaix. By outsmarting and outsprinting the imperious Poga\u010dar, he demonstrated that rumours of his professional demise had been exaggerated.<\/p><p>Second at Dwars door Vlaanderen, third after a long chase following a crash at Milano-Sanremo, and fourth at the Ronde van Vlaanderen reinforce how impressive a Spring the Belgian has had.<\/p><p>Just behind Van Aert in third place was <strong>Mathieu van der Poel<\/strong>. How many times have the names of Van der Poel, Van Aert and Poga\u010dar been written together? They define a generation of classic riders.<\/p><p>Van der Poel opened his Spring campaign with victory at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and was first at E3 Saxo Classic. An odd off-day at Milano-Sanremo, which may have been the result of a crash and a day of mechanical mayhem at Paris-Roubaix, must have been disappointing to him.<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.podos.io\/hoszq68f90ninx54cecbcgbzd8evndwvly84linvbj89vv7f.jpeg.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"Mathieu van der Poel was King of the cobbled Classics. Mathieu\u2019s Alpecin-Premier Tech teammate<strong> Jasper Philipsen<\/strong> was second-best in the\u00a0<em>Best in Flanders<\/em>\u00a0category, which is based on races held within Flanders.<\/p><p>Philipsen was victorious in the Danilith Nokere Koerse and In Flanders Fields - From Middelkerke to Wevelgem, second at the inaugural Ronde Van Brugge, and eighth at both Dwars door Vlaanderen and Scheldeprijs.<\/p><hr \/><h2 style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>Who impressed<\/strong><\/h2><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>Alec Segaert<\/strong><\/h3><p><strong>Alec Segaert <\/strong>almost won two of the Spring Classics. He was caught by the bunch in sight of the line after a fourteen-kilometre solo move at Danilith Nokere Koerse and then rode a tactical masterpiece to emerge victorious a day later at Grand Prix de Denain.<\/p><p>After forty kilometres away with Segaert, Norwegian Team Visma | Lease a bike professional<strong> Per Strand Hagenes<\/strong> used a section of cobbles to drop the Belgian. But it was not a decisive move, and Segaert managed to keep his rival in sight for the final ten kilometres. Slowly, Segaert reeled him in and was able to sprint past as Hagenes faded.<\/p><p>Hagenes was caught by the sprinting peloton, but Segaert managed to hold on by two seconds. The twenty-three-year-old from Roeselare in West Flanders is riding his first season with Bahrain-Victorious after three years with Lotto.<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.podos.io\/rhsglihyqj75t9k40j9rijusc3nhg4zscf8ju1vbfoqiqqnq.jpeg.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"Alec Segaert had an impressive Spring campaign. Image: <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/helene_cyclingpix\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>@helene_cyclingpix<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>Marco Frigo<\/strong><\/h3><p>Italian<strong> Marco Frigo<\/strong> lit up the Amstel Gold Race with his aggressive riding and seemingly boundless reserves of energy. It was his standout performance of Spring that, after a 244-kilometre break, enabled him to claim tenth place against more exalted company. The performance certainly enhanced his fan base.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>Paul Seixas<\/strong><\/h3><p>How can you not be impressed by <strong>Paul Seixas<\/strong>? The nineteen-year-old French Decathlon CMA CGM Team rider was easily the best in Fleche Wallonne and the only rider able to hold Tadej Poga\u010dar\u2019s wheel until the final climb at La Doyenne.<\/p><p>Everyone, including Poga\u010dar, is tipping him for greatness. Supposedly, his worth increases by half a million dollars each week, and the French President Emmanuel Macron has intervened to persuade him to stay with a French team.<\/p><p>Is he the next Bernard Hinault, the next French Tour de France winner since 1985? At the time of writing, bookies had him as the third favourite to win this year\u2019s Tour de France, even though his participation is unconfirmed.<\/p><hr \/><h2 style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>Top team of the Spring Classics<\/strong><\/h2><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>World Tour<\/strong><\/h3><p><strong>UAE Team Emirates - XRG<\/strong> came out as the top team, well clear of <strong>Team Visma | Lease a Bike<\/strong> and <strong>Alpecin-Premier Tech<\/strong>. Over half of the points for UAE Team Emirates - XRG came from Tadej Poga\u010dar, although\u00a0<strong>Florian Vermeersch<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Beno\u00eet Cosnefroy<\/strong>\u00a0racked up 1,575 points between them, reflecting their strong Spring showing.<\/p><p>Vermeersch was third at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and E3 Saxo Classic, whilst Cosnefroy\u00a0repeated the feat at De Brabantse Pijl and Amstel Gold Race. Isaac del Toro and Juan Sebasti\u00e1n Molano also achieved third place for the team at Strade Bianche and Danilith Nokere Koerse, respectively.<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.podos.io\/7aytfdoxjyygadvgu3wpwtkttvenl16dpmm1tuuecj8tv4hl.jpeg.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"Team Visma | Lease a Bike were second best team. Image: <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/helene_cyclingpix\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>@helene_cyclingpix<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p><p>The second-best World Tour team was <strong>Team Visma | Lease a Bike<\/strong>, whose top scorers were Wout van Aert and <strong>Christophe Laporte<\/strong>. Laporte had a consistent but not spectacular spring, with six top-ten places and a best of third at In Flanders Fields - From Middelkerke to Wevelgem.<\/p><p><strong>Matthew Brennan<\/strong>, after a spectacular year in 2025, won Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, but otherwise was unplaced or did not finish his other five Spring Classics. <strong>Per Strand Hagenes<\/strong> was a superb domestique for the team and still managed second place at the E3 Saxo Classic.<\/p><p>British prospect<strong> Ben Tulett<\/strong> came into his own in the Ardennes with third at La Fl\u00e8che Wallonne and thirteenth at Li\u00e8ge-Bastogne-Li\u00e8ge.<\/p><p>Hard on the heels of Team Visma | Lease a Bike were <strong>Alpecin-Premier Tech <\/strong>with Mathieu van der Poel and Jasper Philipsen. They were backed up by cyclocross specialist turned roadman climber <strong>Emiel Verstrynge<\/strong>. Emiel soared in the Ardennes with fifth and fourth at the Amstel Gold Race and Li\u00e8ge-Bastogne-Li\u00e8ge, respectively.<\/p><p>More was expected of Tibor del Grosso, but one rider who looked like he was going to have a strong Spring for the team was German <strong>Henri Uhlig<\/strong>. Fourth at Grand Prix de Denain, he promptly broke his collarbone in Catalunya, bringing his early season to an end.<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.podos.io\/kxgda9f6fsrcfipfmca8xriigp31bpnewybbkjpugg61nlab.jpeg.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team were the top Pro Conti team. Their top scorer was <strong>Tom Pidcock<\/strong>. His five rides netted him 1,053 points. Victory at Milano-Torino and second at Milano-Sanremo were the highlights. He was unlucky to have to change bikes at the worst time in Li\u00e8ge-Bastogne-Li\u00e8ge, where he might have expected a top ten finish at least.<\/p><p><strong>Quinten Hermans <\/strong>was second in De Brabantse Pijl, and <strong>Aim\u00e9 De Gendt\u00a0<\/strong>had top-ten places at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and In Flanders Fields - From Middelkerke to Wevelgem.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>The worst World Tour team<\/strong><\/h3><p>Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team beat ten of the World Tour teams, the worst of which was <strong>Team Picnic PostNL<\/strong>. Last year, it was Ark\u00e9a - B&amp;B Hotels who held this unenviable position, and they folded at the end of the season.<\/p><p>The Dutch team currently languish at the bottom of the UCI\u2019s World Tour rankings, and the threat of relegation hangs heavy over the squad. Pavel Bittner scored 450 of their 656 points total with top-ten results at sprinter classics Bredene Koksijde Classic, Ronde Van Brugge and Scheldeprijs.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>The best UCI Continental team<\/strong><\/h3><p>Unique cycling team <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/blog\/beat-cycling-club-the-sustainable-cycling-team\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>BEAT CC p\/b Saxo<\/strong><\/a>, who are partly funded by the members of their club and aim to be a sustainable cycling team, for example, travelling by train rather than plane, were the top UCI Continental team. As a UCI Continental-level team, they are excluded from many races and only rode four: Le Samyn, Bredene Koksijde Classic, Scheldeprijs and De Brabantse Pijl.<\/p><p>Their 80 points, which granted them the twenty-seventh best team, came courtesy of <strong>\u00a0David Dekker,<\/strong> who was seventh at Schedleprijs and thirteenth at Bredene Koksijde Classic. The twenty-eight-year-old sprinter previously rode for Jumbo-Visma and Ark\u00e9a - B&amp;B Hotels. He is the son of former Tour de France stage and Amstel Gold Race winner Erik Dekker.<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.podos.io\/tcltys9yejborrlpwuizvwc7386alakvkz4pzps7ivbl9gww.jpeg.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"Picnic PostNL and BEAT CC p\/b Saxo had contrasting seasons. Impressive as it is to watch Tadej and Mathieu ride away into the distance, it doesn\u2019t often generate the level of drama or excitement you might wish for. In the two races that entertained us the most, Poga\u010dar and Van der Poel were only competing in one of them - Paris-Roubaix.<\/p><p>The decision as to which were the best races of Spring is based upon suspense, that is, how late in the race did we know who the winner would be, and watching on catch-up, how much of the race did we watch as opposed to fast-forwarding. Here are our two best races of the Spring Classics.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\">Paris-Roubaix<\/h3><p>Was there ever a more popular winner of a bike race? It seemed that the whole of Belgium and any non-partisan fans erupted in joy when <strong>Wout van Aert <\/strong>crossed the line first after outsprinting <strong>Tadej Poga\u010dar<\/strong> after 258 action-packed kilometres in Roubaix stadium.<\/p><p>It was no fluke either. He was a match for Poga\u010dar on the cobbles and showed the Slovenian he\u2019s still a cycling force to be respected. It was both an athletic and intelligent performance that drew plaudits from his rivals and even the Belgian press.<\/p><p><strong>Mathieu van der Poel\u2019s<\/strong> fight-back after the comedy capers of Team Alpecin Premier-Tech in the Trou\u00e9e d'Arenberg was magnificent. Many would have thrown in the towel, but he persevered and was only fifteen seconds down in fourth place by the end.<\/p><p>The mechanics were especially busy with a huge number of punctures. Perhaps Paris-Roubaix is a place for some old-school wheel and tyre technology after all.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>Dwars door Vlaanderen<\/strong><\/h3><p>For the second year in succession, Dwars door Vlaanderen was one of our standout races. <strong>Wout van Aert <\/strong>went on a solo break with forty kilometres still to race. It all became nail-bitingly close in the final few kilometres, and even more so when <strong>Filippo Ganna<\/strong> tried to close the gap on his own. He edged closer and closer until he was able to pass Van Aert just before the line. These two finished, first and second, in the same time as the rest of the bunch.<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.podos.io\/jaqbszahn36fbnd51afk4ppth6o9kfqyn7mohw8st16osijy.jpeg.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"Wout\u2019s victory in Paris-Roubaix was universally popular. For most riders, the only welcome is a recovery drink and a shower, and for some, the prospect of doing it all again in a couple of days.<\/p><p>Groupama - FDJ United professional <strong>Axel Huens<\/strong> is one such rider. He started and finished twelve of the Spring Classics races, remarkably scoring points in all but one. His best place was seventh at GP de Denain.<\/p><p>That\u2019s 2,569 kilometres of racing. This is his first year riding for Groupama - FDJ United after two seasons with Unibet Tietema Rockets. The twenty-four-year-old French rider is yet to achieve his first professional victory. Perhaps he never will, but this ability to consistently score UCI points should keep him in gainful employment for a few more seasons.<\/p><hr \/><h2 style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>More numbers<\/strong><\/h2><p>Cycling is increasingly a sport of numbers, so we thought we\u2019d throw in a few random ones. Last year\u2019s figures are included in brackets for comparison.<\/p><p>945 (944 2025) different riders took part in the twenty races, with 47% (45% 2025) scoring at least one point.<\/p><p>The race with the highest number of non-finishers was Dwars door Vlaanderen, with 106 DNFs (Strade Bianche had 76 in 2025). Scheldeprijs only had six drop-outs (Milano-Torino had four in 2025).<\/p><p>Only one rider finished outside the time limit at Paris-Roubaix, compared to five last year.<\/p><p>Alex Zingle was disqualified from the E3 Saxo Classic for a \u2018sticky bottle\u2019 incident.
