We\u2019ve tried to reflect the consensus as to what constitutes a Spring Classic.<\/p><p>The Spring Classics season starts with Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and ends with Liege-Bastogne-Liege and we only consider one-day races as qualifying for Spring Classic status.<\/p><p>We include all the World Tour races which incorporate four of the monuments: Milano Sanremo, Ronde van Vlaanderen, Paris-Roubaix and Liege-Bastogne-Liege.<\/p><p>Then we add in all the Belgian 1.Pro races as the Spring Classics are primarily about Belgium. Image: <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/helene_cyclingpix\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>@helene_cyclingpix<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p><p>With wins at Paris-Roubaix, Ronde van Vlaanderen and E3 Saxo Classic as well as podiums at Li\u00e8ge-Bastogne-Li\u00e8ge and Gent Wevelgem, Van der Poel finished 765 points ahead of teammate <strong>Jasper Philipsen<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Philipsen had wins at Milano-Sanremo and Classic Brugge-De Panne, plus podiums at Danilith Nokere Koerse and Scheldeprijs.<\/p><p>A very deserved third place was taken by <strong>Tadej Poga\u010dar<\/strong> who only rode three Spring Classics but utterly crushed his opponents at Li\u00e8ge-Bastogne-Li\u00e8ge and Strade Bianche and finished third at Milano-Sanremo.<\/p><p><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/jyp3c1hqqhteuflnqbej9cpxmhgo4hulu39dhdaiowyy6dvp.jpg.jpg?w=680&amp;v=2\" alt=\"visual page break\" title=\"visual page break\" \/><strong>ABOUT RIJDEN<\/strong>: <em>Rijden grew from a passion for Flemish-style cycle racing. Read <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rijden.uk\/about-rijden\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>more about Rijden<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p><p><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/jyp3c1hqqhteuflnqbej9cpxmhgo4hulu39dhdaiowyy6dvp.jpg.jpg?w=680&amp;v=2\" alt=\"visual page break\" title=\"visual page break\" \/>Pogacar scored an impressive average of 573 points per race compared to next-best Van der Poel\u2019s 439 points per race.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\">King of the cobbled and Flemish classics<\/h3><p><strong>Van der Poel<\/strong> came out on top too in the cobbled and Flemish race categories but <strong>Nils Politt<\/strong> was second in the cobbled classics, whilst <strong>Lucca Mozzato<\/strong> was second overall in the Flemish races.<\/p><p>Outside of Flanders and on the smooth, or at least tarmacced and gravelled, roads it\u2019s <strong>Tadej Poga\u010dar<\/strong> who proved best. In fact, Van der Poel only finished fourth behind <strong>Poga\u010dar<\/strong>, <strong>Philipsen <\/strong>and <strong>Maxim van Gils<\/strong> in those races without cobbles.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\">Who impressed<\/h3><p>We saw some surprise victories with <strong>Jannik Steimle<\/strong> holding off the chasing elite group to sprint to victory at Grand Prix de Denain from breakaway partner Ceriel Desal. They\u2019d been part of a breakaway for over 180 kilometres.<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/20h91revtwfhvseyjwwoxzsw3uqc4z6qbsltflr8gdoeq5yc.jpg.jpg?w=1140&amp;v=2\" alt=\"Jannik Steimle triumphed after a heroic 180 km break at GP Denain. It was the biggest win of the twenty-six-year-old Ark\u00e9a - B&amp;B Hotels rider\u2019s career. He followed that up with second place at the Ronde van Vlaanderen.<\/p><p><strong>Alberto Bettiol<\/strong>\u2019s win at Milano-Torino was a reminder that before Covid he\u2019d won the Tour of Flanders in a solo move. He\u2019s not looked like the same rider since. He\u2019s clearly in better form as he followed up his win in Milano-Torino with a fifth at Milano-San Remo just three days later.<\/p><p><strong>Stephen Williams<\/strong> was nobody\u2019s pick apart from guest Eurosport commentator Luke Rowe for victory at La Fl\u00e8che Wallonne. Years of living on the Welsh coast had prepared him for the freezing conditions and he flew up the final climb.<\/p><p>Another rider who improved significantly was under-23 British sensation <strong>Jo Blackmore<\/strong>. His fourth place at Brabantse Pijl when riding for team leader <strong>Dylan Teuns<\/strong> was truly impressive.<\/p><p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/gift-ideas-for-cyclists\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/csdo1fx92tzmefqt6faocjjf4iu35lloyv3dl2o3rbhsamxa.jpg.jpg?w=1140&amp;v=2\" alt=\"Cycling gifts for fans of cycling's classics and cyclocross by Rijden.\" title=\"Cycling gifts for fans of cycling's classics and cyclocross by Rijden.\" \/><\/u><\/a><span>So far this year the rider from Sidcup in England\u2019s Kent has won the Tours of Rwanda and Taiwan, the Circuit de Ardennes and under-23 Li\u00e8ge-Bastogne-Li\u00e8ge. He\u2019s one of the hottest prospects in cycling right now.<\/span><\/p><p>He\u2019s better known as a cyclocross and mountain bike rider and his international road racing experience is limited.<\/p><p>American <strong>Matteo Jorgenson<\/strong> made another step up this year with a victory at Dwars door Vlaanderen and fifth at the E3 Saxo Classic. It\u2019s hard to pigeonhole him as a rider having demonstrated his versatility by winning Paris-Nice at the start of the year.<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/vztb2wwb8bosxj0en0wbyuk9e3o3qcptgg14whm5w9cmz7bh.jpg.jpg?w=1140&amp;v=2\" alt=\"Nils Politt was second-best in the cobbled classics. Image: <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/helene_cyclingpix\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>@helene_cyclingpix<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p><p><strong>Maxim Van Gils<\/strong> is another versatile rider who performed at his best level in the Spring Classics with fourth at Li\u00e8ge-Bastogne-Li\u00e8ge and third in La Fleche and Strade Bianche. He can climb and perform well in time trials. Where does his future lie?<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\">Top team of the Spring Classics<\/h3><p><strong>Alpecin-Deceuninck<\/strong> finished as the best team of the Spring Classics ahead of <strong>UAE Team Emirates <\/strong>and <strong>Lidl-Trek<\/strong>. Having looked utterly dominant earlier in the season, the Alpecin boys collectively faded when it came to the final few races.<\/p><p>Quinten Hermans in particular never looked likely to repeat his second place in the 2022 Li\u00e8ge-Bastogne-Li\u00e8ge but Van der Poel and Philipsen did enough to earn the team the top spot.<\/p><p>Top Pro Team were<strong> Lotto Dstny<\/strong> who finished seventh overall. They have <strong>Maxim van Gils<\/strong> to thank for saving their Spring campaign after <strong>Arnaud De Lie<\/strong>\u2019s disastrous start to the year.<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/ojjwbaid6qu8qvc3lcsbxt1riehmgekviksgtlb767scwwoz.jpg.jpg?w=1140&amp;v=2\" alt=\"Team Cofidis didn\u2019t cover themselves in glory during the Spring Classics. They only scored two top-ten results with 168 of their 436 points coming at La Fl\u00e8che Wallonne and Li\u00e8ge-Bastogne-Li\u00e8ge. The reality is that they\u2019re not a team built for the Spring Classics.<\/p><p>What their sponsor craves is Tour de France TV coverage so naturally they have built a team around this aim. They have little interest in Flemish cobbled classics but they\u2019re obligated to ride as a World Tour team. Wouldn\u2019t it be more appropriate to flex that rule and allow teams that are really interested to enter?<\/p><p>And what of <strong>Soudal Quick-Step<\/strong>, the team that used to be <em>the <\/em>classics team? They just scraped into the top ten teams behind second-best Pro Team Israel Premier-Tech. Without <strong>Tim Merlier<\/strong> and <strong>Mauri Vansevenant<\/strong>, it would have been a dreadful Spring.<\/p><p>Thanks to Tim Dupont\u2019s twelfth place at Scheldeprijs, <strong>Tartaletto-Isorex<\/strong> finished as the top UCI Continental team from <strong>Van Rysel-Roubaix<\/strong>.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\">Best race of the Spring Classics<\/h3><p>Our favourite race was the Grand Prix Denain won by Jannik Steimle after he was part of a group that went clear with 180 kilometres still to race.<\/p><p>It's unusual for the early break to stay away and two of their number did just that. But only just. I was on the edge of my seat urging one of them, anyone of them to do the impossible.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\">Unsung heroes<\/h3><p>So far, we\u2019ve focussed on the winners and well-known names but what of the unsung heroes of the Spring Classics? How about twenty-two-year-old <strong>Dylan Vandenstorme<\/strong>?<\/p><p>The Team Flanders-Baloise rider started fourteen of this year\u2019s Spring Classics. He finished ten, picking up five points for 45th place at Classic Brugge-De Panne.<\/p><p>Ignoring those races where he didn\u2019t finish, young Dylan rode 2,091 kilometres of Spring Classics in just under 48 hours.<\/p><p><strong>Luca Mozzato<\/strong> started twelve races and finished every single one.<strong> Alvaro Hodeg<\/strong>, <strong>Jelle Vermoote<\/strong> and <strong>Michael Vink<\/strong> all took part in eleven races without scoring a single point.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\">More numbers<\/h3><p>Cycling is increasingly a sport of number so we thought we\u2019d through in a few random ones.<\/p><p>Over eight hundred different riders took part in the twenty races. Just under half of them scored at least one point.<\/p><p>The race with the highest number of non-finishers was La Fl\u00e8che Wallonne with 130 DNFs which is unsurprising given the weather. Milano-Torino only saw three riders drop out.<\/p><p>Eighteen riders finished outside the time limit at Paris-Roubaix. Three riders were disqualified across the twenty races.
