We’re big fans of Ellen here at Rijden. She represents everything that’s positive about sports. Belgian TV broadcasts highlights of the junior and under-23 races which precede the G-Sports events but the G-Sports riders don’t get any TV time. TV broadcasts had a dramatic impact on women’s cyclocross. I can’t help but wonder what a few minutes on TV might do for G-Sports.

Q&A with Silke

But I’ll let Silke tell her own story.

When and why did you start cycling?

I was a gymnast until I was twelve, and then I looked for another sport to take part in. I didn’t like cycling so I didn’t consider it to be an option. However, from an early age, my parents had always taken me to watch cyclocross and road races. They were part of the supporters’ club for Bart Wellens who lived in Vorselaar.

(Bart was one of the main rivals to cyclocross legend Sven Nys. The rivalry between the riders was intense and polarised the sport in Flanders. Bart was Cyclocross World Champion in 2003 and 2004).

There were very few races for people with disabilities

My brother took up cyclocross and watching a race at Vorselaar convinced me to try. At this time the G-Sports category was virtually unknown and there were very few races for people with disabilities. We didn’t read about G-Sports until 2013.

What was your first race?

My first race was in Arendonk, which was organised by Liesbeth De Vocht. (Ed: Liesbeth is a former Belgian National Champion, Olympian and professional who retired in 2014.)

It was an extremely stressful and hot day. But I was determined to give it a go. There were five girls and we started with the boys. I was accompanied by another rider who helped me during the race.

Silke loves cyclocross Image: Anja Sterckx

By the end, I was exhausted and thought I’d never compete again. Then I heard that I was third and from then on I was hooked.

What’s your favourite cycling discipline?

I’m better at road racing but I love the atmosphere of cyclocross. The G-Sport cyclocross race is always between the junior and elite women’s races. This means there are lots of spectators to encourage us. On the road, it’s very different as there are few people watching. I prefer riding races with spectators and I love the mud. There are now many cyclocross races for G-Sports riders.

How did you win the Belgian National Championships in road and cyclocross?

I’m also the cyclocross champion of Flanders. It was fantastic to win last year as it was the first time it was organised for G-Sports riders. It was held in Gullegem (near Kortrijk in Flanders) and was extremely muddy. I struggled to stay on my bike but I fought with all my determination for victory. It was a beautiful feeling to put on the Belgian tricolour jersey. It was the first time I’d ridden for my new team so it was a very special occasion.

I’d trained for months for the road race championships. Leading up to the event I was extremely stressed but on the day of the race, I felt completely relaxed. I’d learnt a lot from Ellen. She’d given me lots of tips and tricks such as how to deal with hot conditions. The day was very warm at over 35 Centigrade.

On the starting grid Image: Anja Sterckx

The race was a battle all the way to the finish and when I crossed the line first it felt like such a special victory.
