Some are backed by reliable science and evidence, but many are not. I’m often asked what the best cycling supplements are.

Cycling is physically demanding

It’s not surprising. Cycling is a physically demanding and time-consuming sport. I’ve been using BetterYou Magnesium for over ten years.

It's transformed my health, fitness and cycling performance. I can track the improvement in my results from when I started using BetterYou Magnesium. I won races again and even the odd medal at the national level.

I should declare that I’m a Brand Ambassador for BetterYou. I think I’m probably their oldest Ambassador both in age and length of tenure. They have many more famous Ambassadors than me, including the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team.

My story

Even if I wasn’t a Brand Ambassador, I’d still recommend BetterYou Magnesium because it’s made such a difference to me. This is my story of how I discovered Magnesium and how it’s helped me.

Image credit: Mick Searle. Racing in the 1980s for VC St Raphael (right)

I took up cycling when I was eighteen. I improved for a few years and started to win amateur races. I always seemed to suffer from migraines after races but just accepted it as something that I’d have to live with. After a few years, I struggled to shake off a virus that plagued me. Eventually, I packed up serious cycling.

I took up competitive cycling again in my late thirties. I started to win again and enjoyed some success at the local level. Then I suddenly started to feel ill again. I lacked energy, felt tired much of the time, and my muscles started to twitch frantically. All over my body, my muscles went into spasms, and I constantly cramped whilst racing. It became so serious that it was affecting my ability to work.

Finding little help from my local GP, in desperation I spent a small fortune to see a specialist who tested my Magnesium levels. When the results came back, he expressed amazement that I was able to get out of bed, never mind race.

The solution was Magnesium injections into my backside. I was warned that they would hurt. After the first one, to my surprise, I hardly felt anything, but a few minutes later, as I walked back to my car, it kicked in.

A horse had just delivered a blow to my buttocks

Kicked is the right word. It felt like a horse had just delivered a blow to my buttocks. I was doubled in pain and struggling to avoid sounding like Frankie Howard. As the weeks passed and my Magnesium levels improved, the kick lessened.

My health improved, and after a while, I recommenced training. About a year later, I was struggling to sleep. I Googled products and came across BetterYou’s Magnesium Oil Goodnight spray.

Image credit: Mick Searle. Magnesium has enabled me to race again (left)

I purchased a bottle with little real expectation that it would help. After a week of use, I realised that my legs no longer hurt as much after training. They used to scream with pain afterwards, and I thought this was normal. The improvement was startling. The more I used the Magnesium spray, the better I felt.

Over time, my asthma and migraines disappeared. My legs just felt like they were getting stronger every day. The constant muscle twitching vanished, and even my hay fever improved.

Every day starts with BetterYou Magnesium Gel and every ride ends with it

Today, BetterYou Magnesium is such an important part of my life. Every day starts with BetterYou Magnesium Gel and every ride ends with it. But why is Magnesium so important to health, and what is Magnesium Gel used for?

Why is Magnesium so important?

Magnesium is critical to human health, and its deficiency is associated with several health issues. But for athletes, it's an important element in the production of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP).

If you don’t have Magnesium your body can’t produce energy

Why is ATP so important? Because it’s the only chemical in the body that can be directly used as energy. Other forms of chemical energy need to be converted into ATP before they can be used. Put simply, if you don’t have Magnesium, your body can’t produce energy.

Muscles are useless without Magnesium

It’s also vital in controlling muscle contractions. Sodium, Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium are all required in sufficient and balanced amounts to control muscle contractions. Without them, your muscles may spasm or cramp. There’s always been a lot of focus on Sodium and Potassium concerning cramps but little on Magnesium and Calcium.

Symptoms of Magnesium deficiency

The list of health issues related to insufficient Magnesium is long, but here are some of the key ones:

Asthma

Migraines

Blood pressure

Calcium absorption - Everyone knows that Calcium is essential for healthy bones. But what’s not so well known is that without Magnesium your body can’t absorb Calcium.

Brain function - GPs tend not to test patients for their Magnesium levels. But I’m informed by an NHS friend that it’s common for Mental Health units to test patients’ Magnesium levels because of its important role in brain function.

Declining levels of Magnesium

According to Public Health England, the levels of Magnesium in our diet have declined by 21% since 1940. They also believe that 70% of all UK adults may be Magnesium deficient.

Intensive farming is one of the possible causes. The levels of nutrients in the soil have been in decline. It’s such an issue that sheep can become Magnesium deficient. The grass they are now eating is just not providing them with sufficient amounts. Vets inject them with Magnesium, and the sheep that have keeled over bounce back up again.

Image credit: Unsplash/Nathan Dumlao. Magnesium is lost through sweat and in the production of ATP

Athletes are at risk because it is lost through sweat and in the production of that all-important ATP.

Consuming high levels of Calcium, processed fats, refined sugars, salt, synthetic sweeteners or caffeine, and energy drinks all reduce the body’s ability to absorb magnesium.

Why not just take Magnesium supplements?

I’m sure that Andrew Thomas, the founder of BetterYou, would be able to tell you about the purity of their Magnesium and other benefits. But the really clever bit is that it’s absorbed through the skin. That means that you achieve really high absorption rates of over 80%.

By comparison, taking Magnesium orally, you'll only achieve about 25% absorption. Additionally, take enough orally, and you’ll spend your time attached to the toilet seat. Lots of laxatives contain Magnesium.

There are unlikely to be any side effects of Magnesium Gel unless you have very high levels of Magnesium in your body already. This is quite uncommon.

Natural sources of Magnesium

Almonds are a good source of Magnesium. They're a bit of a super-food in my book as they are high in many minerals. Other good sources of Magnesium include:

Dark chocolate - is another superfood, but it needs to be at least 70% Cocoa to be any good.

Leafy green vegetables such as Spinach

Beans (e.g. black, kidney and edamame beans)

Pumpkin, Flax and Chia seeds

Avocados

Whole grains

Brown rice

Potatoes

Soy milk - so that includes Tofu

Like pills, although foods may have a high percentage of Magnesium, it doesn't all get absorbed. But it's a good idea to consider eating more of the foods that do contain Magnesium, as they tend to be high in other nutrients too.

Magnesium Gel is easy to use

BetterYou produces Magnesium products in spray, gel, lotion and flake form. Personally, I use the gel immediately after a shower when my skin's pores are nice and open.

I just rub it on my legs and arms. It absorbs best where the skin is at its thinnest. As it's water-soluble, any excess can be wiped off with a damp cloth after allowing a few minutes for it to soak in.

BetterYou Magnesium Gel is easy to apply

I also use the flakes in a footbath. It’s great after a hard block of training or the night before an important event. I just sit with my feet in a warm footbath and watch some cycling on TV.

When should I use Magnesium Gel?

Personally, I use it after every ride, and if I’m not cycling on a particular day, then I take it after my morning shower. If I’ve trained especially hard or been suffering with illness, then I’ll take extra.

Summary

I accept my case is extreme. I’ll never know why my levels became so low. Given I had always suffered from migraines, I suspect my values were always low. The specialist concluded that I’d probably had a virus which had caused the levels to become very depleted.

Unfortunately, he informed me that once they become very low, it’s hard to get them up and keep them sufficiently high. Hence why Magnesium is so important to me.

Public Health England believes the majority of the population is likely to have sub-optimal levels of Magnesium.
