What is the secret product Proolailf and is it really the answer to Jumbo Visma\u2019s success?<\/p>

What is the Secret of Jumbo Visma\u2019s Success?<\/h3>

Whispers from within the Dutch cycling scene have grown progressively louder. One word, in particular, has been repeated more than once by some of our more shadowy contacts. What is Proolailf and how could it be helping the boys in yellow?<\/p>

Exclusive to Rijden, we have the expose on this radical product that is set to transform cycling. The story starts some five years ago when the Red Bull F1 team tried to eliminate an issue known as piston slap. It\u2019s a common issue on high-performance engines and whilst the noise is not an issue for motor racing, the increased drag is.<\/p>

\u201cwe looked for a cure for zuiger klap\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>

The Red Bull team turned to the fluid dynamics team at Radboud University in Nijmegen led by Professor Peter van Onzin. Talking anonymously, one of his team told us \u201cJa, we looked for a cure for zuiger klap or piston slap as you English would call it. As we were developing it for Red Bull, we called it Project Bull Klap.\u201d<\/p>

Eventually, the team developed a secret new compound that they patented as Proolailf which apparently is named after the initials of the team members. It\u2019s so secret that they wouldn\u2019t tell us any more than it\u2019s a very fine material that behaves like a liquid and is incredibly expensive.<\/p>

\u201cvirtually eliminates chain friction\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>

Through Dutch contacts within Red Bull, Jumbo Visma acquired some samples late last year and was secretly testing them on chains. They discovered that it virtually eliminates chain friction and can save about 15 watts. That might not seem much but it can be the difference between winning and losing in professional cycling.<\/p>

We contacted the UCI and they confirmed that, if it existed, Proolailf would be completely legal. The man on the phone at Aigle somewhat scoffed at the idea \u201cIt\u2019s not like it\u2019s important, unlike sock height. Next, you\u2019ll be suggesting there are motors in bikes.\u201d<\/p>

But will we start to see other teams adopting Proolailf? \u201cOnly if they are very rich.\u201d replied our secret contact. Apparently, the controversial lubrication of Wout\u2019s chain in E3 Saxo Classic cost about 500 Euro.<\/p>

The team at Radboud University own the patent and intends to market it to other teams and recreational cyclists. They believe that only amateurs with more money than sense are likely to buy it and are currently in negotiation with a high-end clothing brand based in London.<\/p>
