Yes, of course, we refer to Tadej Pogačar.

From six starts, the Slovenian maestro has won three times, crashed out once, finished third and eighteenth. The latter two performances were before his cycling domination. For the past two editions, he has looked unbeatable. He’s reached such a level that most accept that only illness or a crash can prevent him from achieving his third consecutive triumph.

Should Pogačar falter, who will be there to pick up his baton? The most obvious candidate is Belgian superstar Remco Evenepoel, who has two Liège-Bastogne-Liège victories to his name. He’s in excellent shape, as witnessed by his win at the recent Amstel Gold Race.

Cycling’s hottest property, nineteen-year-old Paul Seixas, completely dominated the Itzulia Basque Country, winning three stages, the overall, mountain, points and youth categories. He was second at Strade Bianche, not long after coming out on top at the Faun-Ardèche Classic.

Is the distance too much for him? The evidence suggests not, having finished thirteenth in the elite World Championships and seventh at Il Lombardia last season. After his victory at Fleche Wallonne, he will be much feared by the opposition.

Thirty-one-year-old Giulio Ciccone, in his eleventh season as a professional, was runner-up behind Pogačar last year. He’ll probably never win a monument, but he has a strong chance of finishing on the podium.

Tom Pidcock will come into Liège-Bastogne-Liège as something of a dark horse. He crashed out of Volta Ciclista a Catalunya after victory at Milano-Torino and second as the only man to stay with Tadej at Milano-Sanremo. His preparation will be the five-day Tour of the Alps. Pidcock was second at Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2023 when Remco literally rode him off his wheel. Pidcock has been a consistent performer since.

Prediction: 1. Last year, she was third in the sprint for the line.

The FDJ United-SUEZ rider will face stiff opposition from CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto’s Kasia Niewiadoma. The Polish star is not a prolific winner, but has racked up excellent results and looks to be in strong form. Can she convert all those second places into victory?

Puck Pieterse was unable to repeat last year’s triumph at La Fleche Wallonne. She almost caught Demi Vollering on the line. Like Kasia Niewiadoma, Pieterse hasn’t converted many of her races into victories. Her tactics are often questionable. Does she lack confidence in herself? If she can win a road race through tactics as much as pure fitness, it will make a big difference to the popular Dutch rider.

Twenty-three-year-old Paula Blasi has been the revelation of the season. Her win at Amstel Gold could have been seen as fortuitous, but her third place at La Fleche confirmed that she has the power to be up there with the best. The writing was on the wall last year when she was third at the U23 World Championships, first at the U23 European Championships and fourteenth at the UCI elite Gravel World Championships.

Prediction: 1.
