It’s a remarkable achievement given that most riders are written off if they’ve not made it by twenty-three.

We sat down with the Bingoal WB ProTeam professional cyclist to discover more about his journey and what motivates him.

A Love of Cycling

Like most boys in Belgium, Lennert grew up playing football but by the time he reached 16, he’d lost his enjoyment for the game and switched to cycling. You get in the break but you’re already worn out. Worse still, you fail to get into the break and have burnt your energy reserves, but the team still wants you to get a result.

Lennert is quick to reassure me that he has fond memories of riding for Tarteletto-Isorex over three seasons. He enjoyed the racing and if his career had ended at the end of 2022 he’d have had no regrets. What they might lack in resources, they make up for in spirit.

Riding the Tour of Hellas this season, he found he was staying at the same hotel as his former teammates and manager. I wanted to know. Although it’s the team’s decision, he relishes racing in new places. Racing in Gabon and Rwanda was, for him, two of his best-ever cycling adventures. Not only did he experience new cultures and the countryside but it felt like racing “as it used to be”.

Less pressure, more relaxed and without all the usual infrastructure, and riders looking out for one another. These forays to the further corners of the cycling world seem to suit him too. As well as his previous successes at the Tours of Hellas, Iran and Rwanda he picked up the mountain’s competition at this year’s Tropicale Amissa Bongo.

Iran’s National team lead the bunch.
