Now he's adjusting to life as he accepts that his racing career will be just for fun. He reflects on a decade of sacrifice and looks forward to the future.

Big leap from junior to senior cyclist

Julien Van den Brande was one of Belgium's most promising riders as a junior. Sixth in the National Championships and ninth in the junior Ronde van Vlaanderen was topped by selection for the World Championships in Firenze, Italy.

"everyone wants to be a star cyclist in Belgium"

There are few more competitive cycling scenes than men's junior racing in Belgium. It's no wonder they churn out so many professionals. Seemingly everyone wants to be a star cyclist in Belgium.

Unfortunately, Julien was unable to secure a place on an under-23 team when he moved into the senior ranks in 2014. Instead, he signed with UCI Continental Josan To Win Cycling Team. As a result, he jumped from riding races of just over 100 kilometres to up to 200 kilometres.

Riding for EFC L&R Vulsteke Image: Julien Van den Brande

From riding against juniors on restricted gears, he suddenly faced hardened professionals used to churning the 53 x 11. It was a tough experience and a big leap to make for the nineteen-year-old.

Resilience

Was it a mistake I wanted to know. Julien accepts that he struggled both physically and mentally but ultimately it had its benefits. It made him stronger and more resilient. He realised how hard he'd have to push himself to achieve his ambition. Until then, like most of his peers, he'd not understood the severity of the challenge he faced.

Sports director Willy Teirlinck was sympathetic to his young charge and he passed on essential tactics. Willy had himself been a successful professional, winning five stages of the Tour de France in a career that lasted fifteen years.

Going UCI Continental

The following year Teirlinck moved to fellow UCI Continental team Veranclassic taking Julien with him. Julien spent two years with the team where he enjoyed success in the kermesses but struggled in the longer UCI classified races. Perhaps his best result was fifth in the Belgian under-23 National Championship.

Julien (left) created his own team S-Bikes Doltcini Image: Julien Van den Brande

For his final year as an under-23, Julien moved to club team EFC L&R Vulsteke. It's not a registered UCI team but has an impressive reputation acting as a feeder to, in particular, Pro Continental Sport Vlaanderen. Yves Lampaert, Christophe Noppe, Stijn Steels and Jens Wallays, amongst others, are all former riders who went on to join Pro Continental or World Tour teams.

This gave him the motivation needed and he entered the new season brimming with confidence and desire. Unfortunately, he was sidelined by knee problems and endured a bad fracture of his elbow.

Ditching the training rulebook

Fortunately, the team were impressed by his determination and remained convinced of his potential. Even though he would no longer be under-23 he was kept on. He decided to ditch the training rulebook and just train like a professional. Some weeks he trained for over forty hours. By the season's end, he reached his best-ever level. He rode over eighty races, winning 15 of them and placing in the top twenty in several UCI races including 9th in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad for under-23 riders.

Disappointment

Late in the year, Sport Vlaanderen informed Julien that they had a place for him on their team. Julien couldn't have been happier. Laboratory tests followed which went well. Then they dropped a bombshell. The team had changed its plans and withdrew the offer.

Julien is still riding high Image: Julien Van den Brande

"from elation to dejection"

No reason was ever given but in the hotbed home of cycling that is Belgium, politics and personalities can make all the difference. The rug ripped away from under his feet, and Julien went from elation to dejection. He described his feelings at the time by way of an analogy. It was like offering a desperately hungry man a biscuit, then just as he reached out for it whipping it away.

Graveyard shift

For the following season, 2019, he opted to rejoin the ranks of UCI Continental riders and signed for Tartelleto - Isorex. The UCI doesn't set a minimum wage for this third tier of cycling teams.

The Belgian Cycling Federation does, however, and Julien signed for the minimum rate of 10,000 Euro for a part-time contract. Only contracted riders are protected by the Belgian state's minimum wage. Many riders are not offered contracts and ride unpaid.

"the graveyard of ambition"

The UCI Continental level team could be described as the graveyard of ambition. Hopefuls sign on in the hope that it will be their passport to a place on a Pro Continental or World Tour team.

TV Highlights from the GP Oetingen won by Julien (3:46)

Sadly, the statistics suggest they are optimists. Very few riders make the breakthrough via this route. There are exceptions, such as those Continental teams that act as a feeder to World Tour or Pro Continental teams, like Groupama-FDJ and Alpecin-Fenix.

Many UCI Continental teams are run on a shoestring budget and support for riders is minimal. Although they can ride against the very best in UCI 1.1 races, the lack of racing at such a level and greater race distance presents a significant barrier to success.

Faced with these hurdles you might expect that teams would struggle to sign riders but it's not the case. Professional cyclists in Belgium are so highly regarded and the ambitions of young men, and increasingly women, are so intense.

There are always those who believe they can prove the odds wrong. Not only do riders race and train for nothing, sacrificing their careers and education, but it's not unknown that riders pay to ride for teams.

Vindication

Throughout his first season with Tartelleto - Isorex, following his disappointment with Sport Vlaanderen Julien struggled with motivation. He achieved a measure of vindication with an inspired win at the GP Oetingen. Coming out of the Tour of Belgium and then the ZLM Tour in the Netherlands he had superlative form.

The GP Oetingen climbs De Muur van Geraardsbergen

The GP Oetingen includes the famous climbs of De Muur and Bosberg before it moves on to a local circuit. Being close to his home in Ninove, he knew the roads intimately and took full advantage to use the route to his benefit.

Racing in front of his local fanbase spurred him on yet more. Perhaps more than anything, Julien was inspired by the potential of scoring a victory over a full-strength Sport Vlaanderen team.

Time and again he launched attacks until the front group was reduced to ten. With the aid of a teammate, the sprint was a formality and he finished a bike-length clear. Sport Vlaanderen riders finished second and third. The next day he emailed Sport Vlaanderen but, to this day, his email remains unanswered.

Brainpower and the Belgium Tour

For the next two seasons, Julien concentrated on getting into early breaks. This requires hard work and determination but intelligence too. On the first stage of 2021's Baloise Tour of Belgium, he and teammate Gianni Marchand infiltrated the early break.

Julien used his tactical brain and negotiating skills to perfection. He persuaded all of the break's participants to ride slowly once they had gained a sufficient advantage. The bunch adjusted their speed accordingly as they didn't want to catch them too soon.

"such a move seemed like madness"

Then, with 80 kilometres left to race, Julien delivered his masterstroke. He told his fellow escapees to ride even slower. Such a counterintuitive move seemed like madness but they reluctantly accepted his suggestion.

Julien established Gen Z youth club Image: Julien Van Den Brande

The bunch now found they were catching the break rapidly so they slowed right up. Then, like a general of an army, Julien delivered the coup de grace. He instructed the front group to ride flat out. In no time at all their advantage had ballooned and they were well clear.

Eventually, only two riders were able to bridge across, the prodigiously talented Remco Evenepoel and Victor Campenaerts. The break blew apart, and Evenepoel dragged the remnants along all the way to the finish. He remonstrated with them to come through but they were exhausted, although this didn't prevent Robbe Ghys from outsprinting Evenepoel for the win.

"no happy ending"

Julien's teammate Gianni Marchand finished third and would go on to place third overall in Belgium's national tour. An incredible result for a Continental level team. For Julien, there was no happy ending. He crashed on the last stage breaking his hip which wiped out most of his season.

No reward

If Julien had expected to be rewarded by his team for all the publicity he'd generated for them and the sponsors he was to be disappointed. He was offered a place on the team for 2022 but not a contract. In other words, he'd be riding unpaid. It marked the end. All those years of hope, sacrifice and suffering were finally over.

For 2022 Julien is riding for S-Bikes Doltcini. It's a team that he established in 2017 and started as a tourist club. These are non-competitive cycling clubs that meet at a cafe, go for a leisurely ride and then drink beer afterwards. It sounds like my kind of club. The one that Julien started is based at the New Pleintje cafe in Haaltert near his home.

S-Bikes Doltcini grew from a club attached to a cafe Image: Julien Van Den Brande

In 2018 they established a competitive team, now called S-Bikes Doltcini. Both Julien and his girlfriend Fien ride for the team. As well as riding, they manage and run the team. Essentially, they do everything for the team that has a female elite and under-23 team.

Their aim is to develop it into the best Belgian elite amateur team which enables them to develop in a caring and friendly environment that hopefully leads to a professional career.

Gen Z

Julien is convinced that Belgian cycling needs to adapt if it is to continue to attract youngsters who have grown up with the all-pervasive internet. It's noticeable to me that Belgian websites and social media for cycling, tourism and officialdom often lag far behind those of the UK. Basic information can be extremely hard to obtain.

His answer was to develop Gen Z for children aged eight years old and upwards. It's a virtual and physical cycling club that connects members through the internet. Members not only join the community but also have access to discount vouchers and special rewards like riding in the S-Bikes Doltcini team car at races.

"too new for cycling in Belgium"

Julien admits that it's small at the moment but it's growing steadily and they already have a number of keen members. He believes that presently it's too new for cycling in Belgium which he feels is held back by a generational divide and traditional approaches.

YouTube star Matteo Declercq is a member of Gen Z Image: Julien Van Den Brande

YouTube cyclocross sensation teenager Matteo Declercq is a member of Gen Z. He says he has adapted to the working life by only racing twice a week. It's still clearly in his blood.

He's gone full cycle from hopeful junior to semi-professional and suffered the agonising disappointment of rejection. He'd followed his dream to its end.
