All of the cycling coverage was incorporated into TNT Sports. Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns Eurosport, TNT Sports, Discovery+, and HBO Max, increased the cost of watching cycling from £6.99 a month to £30.99.

On March 26, 2026 TNT Sports moved from Discovery+ to HBO Max, which launched in the UK and Ireland. Unfortunately, HBO Max in Ireland does not currently include sports.

Existing Discovery+ users will need to download the HBO Max app or visit https://www.hbomax.com/.

According to Discovery+, your existing email and password credentials will remain valid. The communication from Discovery+ also informs us that “The great news is, these changes won't impact your current plan price or billing cycle.”

Excuse us if we don’t get excited about continuing to pay a minimum of £371.88 a year to watch cycling on TV. HBO Max has announced a discount of £5 per month for those prepared to commit for 12 months. We don’t think that’s a great deal.

The 12-month plan will cost you £311.88 per annum, whilst 10 months of the 1-month plan is £309.99. If you intend to watch 10 months or less of sport, then it's cheaper to stick with the 1-month plan.

There's another consideration too. Existing Discovery+ subscribers have contacted us to say how they were fed up with Discovery+ including adverts. It's quite common for Discovery+ to offer two alternative streams, one with adverts and the other without.

But more recently, they've only been offering a stream with adverts. What we don't know yet is whether this is a clue as to the future coverage under HBO Max.

Our advice is to hang fire and not commit to 12-months until we have a better idea of what life will be like for the cycling fan under HBO Max.

TNT Sports will continue to be offered via Sky, EE and Virgin Media. Note that historically, Discovery+ has provided better cycling coverage than TNT Sports. As stated above, we don’t think that’s a particularly good deal.

Share your account with someone you trust

But we think there are other ways of saving money whilst abiding by the terms and conditions of the service. Unfortunately, that's explicitly prohibited by the terms of service. As soon as you try to use a UK-registered credit or debit card, you will be prohibited from signing up.

Can I watch HBO Max on any device?

Once you’ve downloaded the HBO Max App or gone to their website, you’ll need to create an account. You can then access it via the App or an internet browser (e.g. Google Chrome).

Check the version of the device you’ll need at the official HBO Max website. It also has information about setting up HBO Max on your TV.

You can, of course, connect your device via an HDMI cable to your TV and display it that way.

Are there adverts on HBO Max?

Quite often on HBO Max, you will see the same cycling race offered twice within the app or website. Almost always, one will include adverts and the other won’t. There’s no way of telling before you click them to start the broadcast.

Once you’ve started the broadcast, you’ll notice in the top right-hand corner of the screen the text TNT Sports. If it has a number after it, such as TNT Sports 1 or TNT Sports 4, then you’re watching the version with adverts.

Unless you really want your viewing interrupted with adverts, always choose the TNT Sports version.

🇬🇧 How else can I get TNT Sports in the UK?

Buy TNT Sports through another media channel

Confusingly, TNT Sports is the name used to describe the sports bundled within Discovery+, or as it will be HBO Max, and the name of an add-on available via other media channels, which includes:

EE

Sky

Virgin Media

Prime Video

Is HBO Max the same as TNT Sports?

One important point to note is that the experience of TNT Sports via another media channel is not the same as via Discovery+. In our experience, Discovery+ is less hassle, more likely to be advert-free and provides better coverage.

Check out the HBO Max section above to make sure your viewing is as advert-free as possible. This option doesn't exist outside of HBO Max. TNT Sports, offered via EE, Sky and Virgin Media, often contains adverts, and you can't avoid them.

We've noticed that some races covered on HBO Max aren't shown on TNT Sports, or they are not live or purely highlights.

Fundamentally, TNT Sports is a linear TV experience. That’s like traditional TV, where one program followed the next. This means the number of options it can offer is dependent upon how many channels it has. Discovery+ is more like Netflix, where you can choose exactly what you want to watch and when. It allows them to offer a vast number of options.

TNT Sports has ten different channels (TNT Sports 1 through to TNT Sports 10). Which channel your cycling action will be broadcast on seems to be a whim of TNT Sports. On HBO Max, it’s simple; you just go to Cycling, Cyclocross, etc., as appropriate.

But, for example, on TNT Sports via EE TV, Sky or Virgin Media, you’ll find that on one day the cyclocross action is on TNT Sports 4 and the next on TNT Sports 9. Not only does this make it harder to find, but not all of the channels have dedicated homes.

EE TV has dedicated channel slots for all ten TNT Sports channels, but Sky and Virgin Media only support dedicated slots for TNT Sports 1 to 4. The other channels are accessed via the Red or Digital Button.

Depending upon which media channel you have signed up for, the platform you are using and who you actually pay, the solution and complexity can vary. It certainly confuses, judging by these services’ help forums.

TNT Sports and HBO Max deals

The Radio Times provides a good overview of the current deals to access TNT Sports and HBO Max. These constantly evolve in response to market forces. It outlines the legal, illegal and legally questionable methods of watching cycling for free on TV or via the internet.

Rijden cannot endorse any of the illegal approaches taken, but we are aware that people are using them, and our purpose is to ensure they understand the potential risks. We start with an option that’s definitely illegal.

Watch cycling through an illegal firestick

Several people have suggested on cycling forums that you can avoid paying to watch cycling by purchasing an ‘illicit streaming device’ (ISD), which is also known as a ‘dodgy firestick’. This is where, for example, an Amazon Fire TV Stick has been tampered with to bypass the access controls.

At Rijden, we strongly recommend that you do not use an ISD. It is unquestionably illegal to sell or use one to avoid paying for services. Additionally, there are safety and security risks. People who are caught and ignore cease-and-desist warnings can be and have been sent to jail in the UK.

Whilst you may scoff at the idea of being caught, you need to consider who is selling these devices. They are criminals and often part of a criminal network who make money out of selling the devices, but are then able to hack into your private details, including passwords and bank details.

Using one of these devices not only risks being caught committing a criminal offence, but it is also more likely that you will have compromised your device’s security controls. In short, you’ve opened the back door to hackers. A survey by BeStreamWise suggested that 40% of dodgy firestick users had suffered fraud.

Watch cycling via a pirate stream

Watching a pirate service such as Tiz Cycling is illegal in the UK, but the risk of prosecution is remote. Our friends in Hong Kong inform us that they can access geo-restricted UCI content.

How to watch cycling on Sporza

For UK cycling fans, Belgium’s Sporza channel has often been considered the holy grail of cycling broadcasters. Nobody covers cycle racing like Sporza. It’s free to watch via the VRT and Sporza website and App in Belgium and technically from anywhere in the world, but their content is geo-blocked because they don’t own the rights to broadcast in, for example, the UK, which are usually owned by WBD.

You can, however, overcome this problem by using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to fool the site into thinking you are based in Belgium. They’re used to increase the security of data by preventing techniques such as data sniffing, which is like the postman reading your mail.

Is using a VPN illegal?

It's not illegal to use a VPN in the UK, Ireland or indeed most of the world. There are a handful of countries where it's illegal, such as North Korea and some where it's heavily restricted, like those bastions of democracy UAE and Russia.

That still doesn't make it legal to bypass geo-blocking controls and access, for example, Sporza in the UK. It's a breach of licensing agreements rather than a criminal offence. You could find that your account is suspended.

Some websites will block access if they detect that you’re using a VPN, although some claim, like NordVPN, that they can hide the fact that you’re using a VPN.

But let's assume that you want to access geo-blocked content. Maybe you're going on holiday to Belgium and still want to be able to watch shows on BBC iPlayer, which is geo-blocked outside of the UK. It's actually very simple to do. Here's how.

Which VPN?

First of all, you need to have VPN software installed on your laptop or mobile phone. It's possible that if you're using security software on your device, you may already have a VPN and didn't know it.

Many antivirus software tools come with a built-in VPN, although you may need to upgrade your package to use the VPN. I use Norton 360, which comes with a built-in VPN and is often rated as the best antivirus and VPN combination.

There are dedicated VPNs, of which NordVPN and Surfshark are the best two known. What’s certain is that it’s illegal. It must be in a legal jurisdiction that’s beyond the reach of the UK and EU, otherwise it would have been shut down long ago.

Is watching pirate streams illegal?

According to the UK’s Crimestoppers, you are committing a crime yourself if you watch illegal streams. It was widely reported that Paul Faulkner and Stephen Millington were both jailed for 16 months for watching unauthorised streams.

However, a little investigation reveals that Millington had shared Netflix accounts with thousands and had created a platform that allowed thousands more to watch premium film and television content for free.

I can’t find any reliable reports that anyone just streaming sports illegally at home in the UK has ever been found guilty of an offence. If the police started prosecuting such miscreants, they’d have no time for any other crimes.

Are pirate streams safe?

I’ve never had a virus or malicious attack reported by my anti-virus software whilst using Tiz Cycling, but I know that some people have. A common tactic now is to create a fake Facebook page or even post within a legitimate Facebook page that offers access to a sports live stream. They look very genuine.
