It's quite simple, Kerstperiode means Christmas period.

It's not an expression that's unique to cyclocross, but for fans of Flemish-style racing, it has a special, dare I say, almost religious resonance.

When is the Kerstperiode?

There's no official start to the Kerstperiode. Most cyclocross fans accept that it begins at the start of the almost continuous series of televised Belgian cyclocross races over the Christmas holidays.

For the 2025-26 cyclocross season, that means from Saturday, 20 December, with the World Cup Antwerpen through to Sunday, 4 January, when it concludes with the World Cup Zonhoven. It’s a hugely packed period with twelve days of racing compacted into just sixteen days. The calendar looks like this:

Sat 20 Dec 2025 UCI World Cup Antwerpen

Sun 21 Dec 2025 UCI World Cup Koksijde

Mon 22 Dec 2025 Plage cross in Hofstade

Tue 23 Dec 2025 Heusden-Zolder

Wed 24 Dec 2025 - no race

Thu 25 Dec 2025 - no race

Fri 26 Dec 2025 UCI World Cup Gavere

Sat 27 Dec 2025 - no race

Sun 28 Dec 2025 UCI World Cup Dendermonde

Mon 29 Dec 2025 X2O Trofee Loenhout

Tue 30 Dec 2025 Diegem Cross

Wed 31 Dec 2025 - no race

Thu 1 Jan 2026 Grand Prix Sven Nys

Fri 2 Jan 2026 Exact Cross Zilvermeercross

Sat 3 Jan 2026 Cyclocross Gullegem

Sun 4 Jan 2026 UCI World Cup Zonhoven

Why’s the Kerstperiode important?

The Christmas holiday season has always been of great importance to professional cyclocross riders. Race organisers’ revenue depends upon sponsorship and ticket sales. The more spectators, the greater the income directly from tickets and potentially more if sponsors think they are associating themselves with a high-profile event.

And high-profile means the quality of the riders in terms of their form, but also in terms of their brand recognition with the paying public. At Christmas, there are more people on holiday, and organisers will hope to attract more spectators, outside of the core of hardened cyclocross fans.

Start money

To entice riders to favour their event, cyclocross organisers will offer enhanced start money to riders. It’s simple capitalist economics. The greater your “star quality” with the public, the greater the financial incentive that will be offered to you. With careful negotiation, a rider can significantly boost his or her annual income in just sixteen days.

UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup

Since the UCI. and Flanders Classics, who run the Cyclo-cross World Cup on their behalf, restructured the World Cup calendar, the importance of the Kerstperiode has skyrocketed.

Five of the twelve rounds of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup now fall within the Kerstperiode. Anyone with pretensions for overall victory must be in top form over Christmas to be a contender.

How much start money do cyclocross riders receive?

The amount that's paid in start money to riders is known to vary greatly. What's less clear is exactly how much each rider is paid. No official lists are published, and everybody involved keeps their cards close to their chests.

According to Flemish newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, the top two, Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel, were being paid in the region of €15,000 to €20,000 per race in 2023.

It's believed that those kinds of figures have not changed much since. It's a big jump down to the next rung of riders, which is the regular top dogs, such as Michael Vanthourenhout and Laurens Sweeck. They'll earn around €5,00 to €4,000 for each race they start.

In 2023, Thibau Nys was reportedly earning €2,500 per race, but now, given his success and high profile, you'd expect him to be earning much more.

How much are those at the bottom pile earning, you may wonder. If anything, at all, it's in the region of €250. A local rider, who may draw in more local supporters, or a well-known road racer such as Tim Merlier, will have a higher value.

The total amount paid each year will fluctuate depending on the popularity of the sport and the resultant ticket sales. During the COVID era, when spectators were banned, start money crashed. Riders such as Toon Aerts had to take a 50% cut, but Van der Poel and Van Aert still commanded a premium amount.

READ MORE: Don't miss out on any cyclocross TV action. He suggested that the pay gap would put many of the regular cross riders out of work, and the sport would become unsustainable.

It's slightly ironic, as back in 2008, there were exactly the same complaints about the start money paid to Sven. If riders are grumbling in private, few complain publicly. Either because they know rocking the boat too much will backfire, or because they recognise the sport depends upon crowds, and the big two can bring another 5,000 spectators or more through the door.

Riders are not supposed to receive start money for the UCI World Cup rounds. However, when I've asked people who should know whether that's true for Mathieu and Wout, they give me that knowing look.

The Van der Poel effect

In recent years, Mathieu van der Poel has condensed his cyclocross season into just December and January.

In 2024-25, he competed in a mere eight races, winning every single one, including the World Championships in Liévin.

Looking back at the 2017-18 season, before he became an established star of the road, Van der Poel started 38 UCI cyclocross races. He won 31 of them. An 82% win rate, but crucially failed to win the World Championships at Valkenburg.

The following season, he was down to thirty-four races, winning all but two and was crowned World Champion in Denmark. Steadily, he has reduced the number of races, and his regular pattern is to start in mid-December and ride up to the World Championships at the start of February.

By comparison to last year, Mathieu is packing in thirteen races, starting with Namur and once again finishing with the World Championships, which are held in the Netherlands at Hulst

No doubt the Dutchman will be super motivated to clinch his record-breaking eighth cyclocross rainbow jersey on home turf.

When Mathieu is on the start line, most of his competitors are already thinking about the battle for second place. Despite the disadvantage of starting further back on the grid, due to a lack of UCI points, he's usually out front by the end of the first lap. The next time his rivals see him is on the top step of the podium.

When MvdP and WvA will face off during the Kerstperiode 2025-26

But is it good racing?

There's no doubt that Mathieu van der Poel is a unique specimen of a cyclocross rider. His athletic prowess is incredible, his skills formidable, and his consistency remarkable.

His two possible weaknesses are running and risk-taking. There are others, such as Wout van Aert, who have proven to be better runners. However, following his serious knee injury, Wout probably doesn't present the running challenge he once did.

Additionally, there are only a few races each year where there is enough running for it to be a disadvantage. The greatest threat Van der Poel faces is from himself. He's constantly pushing his bike to its limits. He's able to correct most mistakes through his skill, but occasionally even he makes unforced errors, such as at Benidorm in 2024.

ABOUT RIJDEN: Rijden grew from a passion for Flemish-style cycle racing. During the 2024-25 season, the best race of the Kerstperiode was arguably the Diegem night race, where he was absent.

It was noted that where he had romped off into the distance at some rounds, and his victory was assured, spectators were seen to leave early. Hopefully, this Kerstperiode, Thibau Nys, Joris Nieuwenhuis, Cameron Mason, Michael Vanthourenhout, et al, will provide more of a challenge.

Does MvdP have an unfair advantage?

Undeniably, yes, Van der Poel has a major advantage over the regular cyclocross riders who compete once or twice most weeks throughout the full cyclocross season.

Whilst Mathieu is clocking up the miles somewhere warm and fine-tuning his form towards the middle of December, riders such as Michael Vanthourenhout are running the gauntlet of race, travel, recover, train, recover, travel, race again …

It's hard for them to maintain form, never mind trying to peak for the Kerstperiode and World Championships.
