But we have to confess that we love the Giro d’Italia. The Tour de France might garner all the publicity and coverage in the papers, but we think the Giro beats it hands-down any day and here’s why.

Chaos of the Giro

Call it chaotic or unpredictable, but the Giro d’Italia is usually much less predictable than the Tour de France, which seems more controlled. The Tour and its stages often appear stage-managed so the result is less in doubt.

That’s not always the case, but the Giro, unlike the Tour de France, rarely has one rider who dominates. You have to look back to 1993 to find a rider who triumphed two years on the trot. That was Miguel Indurain, who, by contrast, won the Tour de France for five consecutive years.

In the last eight years, it has been won by eight different riders, none of whom had won it before or since.

The beauty of Italy

Tourist Boards around the world have realised that cycle racing provides the perfect TV opportunity to showcase their country’s beauty. OK, I’m not suggesting that France is an ugly place, but Italy just can’t help but look bellissimo.

The dullest of stages are enlivened by picturesque hill-top towns full of terracotta-roofed houses that overlook the winding valleys, orchards and vineyards. Even the scruffiest of high streets have an aesthetic quality when bedecked with Italian flags and pavements filled with madly cheering children and tifosi.

One significant advantage the Giro has over the Tour de France is that it possesses a much smaller footprint. Due to the greater world interest in Le Tour, it occupies a significantly bigger space at each start and finish location compared to the Giro.

This restricts the Tour’s options for its route. The Giro is less encumbered, which is why it can start and finish seemingly in the middle of nowhere, as long as the appropriate fee has been agreed.

Sense of history

Although the Tour de France is older than the Giro by six years, it’s the Giro that gives the impression of being more closely connected to its past. Previous years have seen the riders struggling over gravel roads as they reached the peak of mountain passes. It’s not hard to envision a similar scene from the 1950s or earlier.

ABOUT RIJDEN: Rijden grew from a passion for Flemish-style cycle racing. We're a small UK independent that publishes a free online cycling magazine and sustainable gifts for fans of cycling’s classics and cyclocross. That might be what Giro organisers RCS might hope for, but its smaller stature, its ability to use the backwaters of Italy and maybe a more insular attitude than its French counterpart seem to keep corporate ambitions more aligned with the past.

Whilst Luxembourg rider François Faber triumphed at the Tour de France in 1909, it wasn’t until 1950 that a non-Italian was crowned overall winner at the Giro when Swiss Hugo Koblet came out on top. The Italian organisers often conspired against foreigners, as Laurent Fignon claimed in 1984.

It’s only since 2008 that we’ve become more used to non-Italians winning. The last Italian to win the Giro was Vincenzo Nibali in 2013, whilst the French haven’t seen a true Tour de France contender since Bernard Hinault won in 1985.

Finally, perhaps it’s because, unlike the original sponsor of the Tour de France, L’Auto, which has long since disappeared, La Gazzetta dello Sport is still united with the Giro d’Italia, providing that historic connection.

Giro d’Italia roots

Like the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia was inspired by a circulation battle between two newspapers. La Gazzetta dello Sport wanted to outdo its arch-rival Corriere della Sera and thought the Giro was the ideal means to do so.

It’s odd then that apparently, Corriere della Sera was one of the organisations and individuals that chipped in to make sure the first race took place. The inaugural event was run on a shoestring budget, but maybe Corriere della Sera realised they could increase their circulation too.

Held over 2,447 kilometres and eight stages, the first edition was a cruel test of stamina and resolve. The longest stage was nearly 400 kilometres, and riders faced unpaved roads, inappropriate diets, poor equipment and the occasional roving wolf.

NEVER MISS OUT: Subscribe to our free email newsletter to get all our latest articles and the chance to enter our free competitions.

We won't bombard you with special offers. We think it’ll be the best Grand Tour of the year.

The race opens at Durazzo, Albania, on Saturday, 9 May, and finishes 23 days and 21 stages later in Roma. Yes, Albania, that well-known province of Italy. If you include San Marino and Vatican City, this is the fifteenth time the Giro has started outside Italy.

Albania, at its closest point, is only 75 kilometres from Italy across the Adriatic Sea, so it’s no more curious than starting in Jerusalem as the Giro did in 2018. The two countries do have a prior history. Italy, under the rule of Benito Mussolini, invaded in 1939. This led to control passing to the Nazis and the eventual communist dictatorship under First Secretary Enver Hoxha.

Hoxha led an ultra-Stalinist regime that was hardline in the extreme. He even had religious institutions nationalised, and the country was considered the most isolated in Europe. Hoxha died in 1985 of natural causes. Albania opened up to the world with the fall of communism in 1991. Today, it has become a popular tourist destination. Attracting the Giro d’Italia is doubtless part of the drive to boost the burgeoning tourist trade.

Did you know? Curiously, despite repudiating Western influence, the English actor, comedian, musician, and singer Sir Norman Wisdom OBE became a superstar in the country. Enver Hoxha determined that his portrayal of comedic and inept character Norman Pitkin represented the working man fighting against capitalist society.

Thus, Hoxha permitted his films to be shown in the heavily censored country. Visiting in 1995 and 2001, Norman Wisdom was mobbed by crowds and was a bigger turn than David Beckham.

Key stages of the 2025 Giro

We’ve picked out ten stages that you won’t want to miss, as they are likely to be decisive in deciding who will don the final pink jersey in Roma.

Stage 2 - Saturday 10 May

The 13.7 km time trial will not be decisive but will provide a pointer to who is in form and who isn’t.

Stage 5 - Wednesday 14 May

No big mountains to contend with, although it is mostly uphill for the last forty kilometres. Roglič’s age, his ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, and his weaker team all count against him.

Then there’s Michael Storer and Thymen Arensman, who both impressed at the Tour of the Alps. In 1924, Alfonsina Strada entered and finished, although not officially, the Giro d’Italia.

It’s a story of intrigue and heroism. Alfonsina entered as Alfonsino, which hid her true gender. She crashed on one stage, snapping her handlebars, but an improvised fix using a shortened broomstick saw her finish, albeit outside the time limit.

Unsurprisingly, she was hugely popular with the crowds, and the organisers allowed her to ride on as an individual rider but excluded her from the official results. She finished the last stage in to Milano ahead of two male contenders.

Alfonsina never raced the Giro again,n and she died in 1959.
