When there are 400 drunk tourists the quality of the playing is not important." Dany replied. A short-term job became a four-year residency.

Leaving Spain he took other jobs in Europe including two years as a security guard in Harrogate. Then one day, because he'd met a girl from Dublin in Ibiza, he boarded a bus that took him from London to Dublin and eventually on that fateful night to a bar in Galway.

“Another bar, another momentous encounter”

He worked on the fishing boat for two years but found himself ashore for three weeks when the boat had to be repaired. Another bar, another momentous encounter. Quietly enjoying a drink, he overheard the distinctive sound of Dutch voices.

He introduced himself to the group of three sisters and two Dutch husbands. The unmarried sister, Maggie, must have made an impression upon him because within two years they became husband and wife.

After eight years of living in Ireland and running a catering business, they moved to Belgium. They managed a busy pub in Zuienkerke, situated between Brugge and Zeebrugge. There they worked long hours running the pub catering for weddings and large parties in its function room.

During this time Dany once again became involved in the local racing scene. His pub becoming home to a supporters' club and he developed contacts that would later be invaluable to the Belgian Project.

Dany with Thor Hushovd and Philippe Gilbert. Ultimately, they settled in Northern Ireland at Newtownards so that she could be close to her children. Newtonards is a historic town, some 10 miles east of Belfast that sits at the northern tip of Strangford Lough.

The Belgian Project is launched

When Dany started the Belgian Project he was, he readily admits, naive and had much to learn. The Project also provides bursaries to riders to help them compete in Belgium and the UK.

Going full time

At the age of sixty, Dany suffered a major heart attack. The number of families in Belgium who are prepared to take in riders is dwindling. The families themselves receive little remuneration and have their own growing responsibilities.

It is likely the Project's costs will increase or they will have to cut back on the number of riders they support. As long as he can, however, Dany is committed to the ideal of helping Irish riders race abroad.

Reflection

After such a peripatetic life, Dany is content in Northern Ireland. He has many friends, respect from his local community and a sense of having made a contribution to the lives of others. A sister and two nieces still live there but home is now a corner of Ireland's beautiful isle. Does he miss Belgian beer, I ask.
