It was a huge one just after the start. Some of the favourites and most of the British team managed to get tangled up. Their races were effectively over before even one lap had been completed.

USA’s Andrew August was one of those caught up in the crash. At the end of lap one he was in 69th place, 1:38 behind the leaders. By the end, has had moved up to seventh still only 1:41 behind the winner. She’s been outstanding this season. Many people probably didn’t get up in time to watch this race as it was expected to be a procession towards her inevitable victory.

Instead, we had the biggest upset of the World Championships. First, she fell off and then, having regained her second place she punctured far from the pits. Her chance of victory was over. But even before the puncture, she didn’t look the rider we’d expected.

Maybe she hurt herself when she fell, maybe it was the pressure of being the favourite or maybe she was just having an off day. Instead, the Canadian Holmgren twins came away with first and second ahead of French rider Celia Gery.

Cat Ferguson produced the second-fastest final lap to take a brilliant sixth place just behind Belgian hope Xaydee van Sinaey and one place ahead of Molengraaf. The latter was disconsolate at the finish and was consoled by her friend and training partner Puck Pieterse.

Our prediction: 1 Molengraaf, 2 Holmgren, 3 Holmgren

Actual result: 1 Holmgren , 2 Holmgren, 3 Gery

Best of British: Cat Ferguson

Beer points score: 1

Full results with lap times.

Cyclocross Team Relay Results

For some disappointing reason, the Team Relay was not broadcast on TV.
