It starts in Ciney, Wallonia and then heads northeast to complete three laps and three climbs of the Mur de Huy (The Wall of Huy).<\/p><p>It's a 1.3 km long climb that averages 9.6%. What makes it brutally difficult are the sections with over 20%. It utterly defines the race and determines the tactics.<\/p><p>It usually comes down to a sprint from a quite large group, but it's a very slow sprint as the riders grind their way uphill.<\/p><p>The race will forever be associated with the notorious Gewiss-Balan team. In 1994, three of their riders, Moreno Argentin, Giorgio Furlan and Evgeni Berzin, rode away from the elite field to finish in that order.<\/p><p>The next day, their doctor, Michele Ferrari, informed a journalist from L\u2019Equipe that EPO was no more dangerous than orange juice. There\u2019s no definition of what constitutes a classic. It\u2019s just a convention that some early-season one-day races are collectively known as the Spring Classics.<\/p><p>Many of the races are in Belgium and feature cobbles, but there are exceptions, such as Italy\u2019s Milano-Sanremo, which is the first of the season\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/cyclings-monuments\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Monuments<\/strong><\/a>. Four out of cycling\u2019s five Monuments take place during the Spring Classics period.<\/p><hr \/><p><strong>EXPLAINER<\/strong>: <em>What are cycling\u2019s Monuments?
