Guide to Belgian cyclosportives<\/h2>

What is a cyclosportive?<\/h3>

A cyclosportive is a mass participation non-competitive cycling event usually held on paved roads. Typically, they are anywhere from 80 to 250 kilometres and include challenging courses.<\/p>

Although non-competitive, they are usually timed, and awards may be made for finishing within a certain time.<\/p>

The term Gran Fondo is sometimes used, especially in the USA and Italy. A \u2018proper\u2019 Italian Gran Fondo is held on closed roads and is competitive with TV coverage and large prizes. None of the events listed below fall into that category.<\/p>

Why cycle in Belgium?<\/h3>

For a start, unlike, for example, the UK, cyclists are respected in Belgium. Many people in Belgium cycle.<\/p>

Even if they don\u2019t, it\u2019s such an integral part of the culture and law that cyclists don\u2019t feel the need to justify their presence on the road.<\/p>

Belgian law assumes guilt on the part of a motorist if they hit a cyclist or pedestrian.<\/p>

Belgium is mainly a rural country, and it\u2019s a perfect place to ride a bike. Flanders has hundreds of interconnected rural roads, which are rarely disturbed by motorists, surrounded by pastoral countryside and gently rolling climbs.<\/p>

It\u2019s a truly magical place<\/p><\/blockquote>

In Wallonia, the climbs are longer, often winding their way from the valleys through to the forests of the Ardennes. It\u2019s truly a magical place.<\/p>

But maybe what\u2019s best is that many sportives cover the same roads as the classic races, such as Ronde van Vlaanderen, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Gent-Wevelgem (now known as in Flanders Fields). You can test your legs out on the same cobbles and gravity-defying climbs.<\/p>

Which sportives are included?<\/h3>

All of the cyclosportives are based, or at least start, within Belgium. The only exceptions are France\u2019s Paris-Roubaix Challenge<\/strong> and the Grand Prix de Denain Challenge.<\/strong> Both have the character of a Flemish Spring Classic.<\/p>

We\u2019ve tried to ensure that we\u2019ve included all the sportives that are associated with the Spring Classic races.<\/p>

Only events promoted by well-established organisations and that are easy to enter online are included. There are many smaller events organised by local clubs and organisations.<\/p>

Belgian sportives: the essentials<\/h2>

Have fun - it\u2019s not a race<\/h3>

These are not races. They may well be hard, but essentially they\u2019re about challenging yourself, and maybe your friends. Above all, it\u2019s about enjoying yourself.<\/p>

Be insured<\/h3>

Make sure you have adequate insurance. As a minimum, have insurance to cover you during the event. If you have general travel insurance, it will almost certainly not cover you for the event.<\/p>

Sports Cover Direct,<\/strong><\/a> based in the UK, will provide event-specific insurance for a single day. It\u2019s cheap and worth it for the peace of mind. The potential costs if you end up in a hospital can run into thousands of pounds.<\/p>

Note that some events include insurance, but check the details. Insurance is void if you don\u2019t wear a helmet.<\/p>

You\u2019re on open roads<\/h3>

Most of the time, you\u2019ll be riding on open roads, so don\u2019t go belting around blind corners on the wrong side of the road. The events use quiet routes, and most locals will steer clear of the area. In Belgium, where there\u2019s a cycle path, you must use it even for cyclosportives.<\/p>

Routes will be well sign-posted, and some points will be marshalled. At the popular events, you won\u2019t need to follow the signs; just follow the long string of riders. It\u2019s not uncommon to end up in groups of thirty-plus riders until you get to the hills.<\/p>

What support will I get?<\/h3>

Almost all events offer support around the course in terms of mechanical assistance, feed stops and a phone number to call if you break down. Expect changing rooms and showers.<\/p>

How much does it cost to enter a sportive?<\/h3>

The cyclosportives in this guide vary from \u20ac110 to as little as \u20ac4. The popular, well-known events like the Ronde van Vlaanderen Cyclo will be oversubscribed with riders travelling all over the world to take part.<\/p>

Smaller affairs such as the Decathlon events charge only \u20ac4 if you enter in advance or \u20ac6 on the day.<\/p>

How do I enter a sportive in Belgium?<\/h3>

All of the cyclosportives in this guide can be entered online. Click on the organiser\u2019s website listed below, choose your distance and pay online. You'll receive confirmation by email.<\/p>

Some of the sportives can be entered on the day, but you\u2019ll pay a bit more and may miss out on some of the freebies.<\/p>

Book early<\/h3>

Some events will sell out and won\u2019t offer entry on the day, so don\u2019t leave it too late to book your place. Additionally, you can usually grab yourself a discount for booking early.<\/p>

Don\u2019t always think big<\/h3>

It\u2019s appealing to enter the sportives related to really famous events. The trouble is that everyone else has the same idea. The cyclosportive for the Ronde van Vlaanderen, We Ride Flanders<\/em>, will have 16,000 participants.<\/p>

The result is that when you get to bottlenecks like the cobbled climbs, most people have to get off and walk. Consider some of the lesser-known sportives to avoid this problem. They are much cheaper, too.<\/p>

Last year, we took part in the Decathlon Kortrijk Classic, and it was a glorious ride through quiet lanes just across the border from Flanders into Wallonia.<\/p>

BIKE HIRE<\/strong>: Travelling with your bike can be a hassle, especially if flying. However, hiring high-quality road and gravel bicycles in Belgium can be surprisingly challenging, especially during peak periods.<\/em><\/p>

The Flandrien Hotel in Brakel boasts Belgium's largest fleet of road and gravel bikes, specifically designed for riding on cobbles.
